Surprises have a way of hitting you on the head and making you see stars. I am literally seeing stars having just learned that my Nervous System book in Scholastic’s Your Amazing Body Series merited a starred review from Booklist!

“A worthy selection [from the series],” notes reviewer Kay Weisman, who highlights the book’s succinct text and clear explanations of anatomy and function. She rightly praises the excellent graphics, pictures, and diagrams supporting and enhancing the written text.

It’s gratifying praise for a topic that is supremely complex and difficult to simplify for young readers. I won’t lie; many tears were shed and many dents pocked my head as I drummed my skull against the walls as I revised and re-revised and re-re-revised the writing. Props to my editors who would never settle for anything less than perfect. Kudos and flower bouquets to the graphics teams who found the best photos and devised those devilish diagrams.

Knowing the ins and outs of the nervous system will prove pivotal for young people growing up in these super stressful times. In the past, the diseases that snuffed out so many lives came from viruses and bacteria — external threats. Today, our deadliest diseases come from within. They are the direct result of suffocating stress and anxiety chewing up our nervous systems.

Children are going to need a clear understanding of the complex networks governing all that they feel, think, and do. Get your copy of Nervous System and equip the young people you love or teach with knowledge that will truly improve, enrich, and extend their lived experience.
